Our attention was caught by two elements in the spoken langaugae,
which seemingly have not found entry into dictionaries or at least
they have been neglected so far.
Lets take the expression "Frederic the Great"
(1)
This may be taken as a proper name without any word stress,
or the wordstress on the very first word, making it sound
"FREDERIC the Great"
There are at least two more versions.
(2)
Should we be inclined to stress the last word,
this would sound rasther emotional and disort the otherwise
neutral picture, showing some sort of criticism,
maybe ridiccule or irony, with any coloring of the emotional
color scale. Maybe with a rise, fall, fall-rise or rise-fall
in the intonation.
"Frederic the GREAT"

Stressing the middle wort turning the 'the" into a "thee"
has the effect of signalling that the followwing word has
special importance,
"Frederic THEE Great"

There is however another element which can be en¼tered
a a pause before the word that is to get special importance.
"Frederic the . . . Great
It is as if we would through some extra light onto the
word following the pause, as if 'sub specie aeternitate'.
Watch for the prosody in the following:
